Geocache Description:

CONGRATULATIONS FTF GOES TO PSEACRAFT

We certainly don’t want to bore you with science, but there are so many incredible remains in this part of the island that we thought it might be interesting to set a trail featuring some of the more unknown ones.  This is one which we have driven past many times and threatened to stop the car to go and look, we finally managed it.

It appears that this is the site of at least three Royal Burials dating back to  roughly 525 – 475 BC.  There are traces of tomb looting and stone looting which would indicate that the tomb was robbed at least three times, once by removing the large stone slab that would have covered the entrance and twice by removing stones and accessing the tomb through the roof.

During archaelogical excavations several items of gold and silver jewellery were found, including a royal diadem, and these match items taken from Kurion in 1874 which are now to be found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York

This information was taken from the book ‘Kourion it’s Monuments and Local Museum’ by Dr. Demos Christou.

Further Information: A friend recently attended an Archaeology Course which included a visit to the tomb and he learnt that the tomb was one of at least 12 excavated by Cessnol in 1890, by the British Museum in 1895 and more recently by the Department of Antiquities in 1998. Noteworthy are the huge lintel across the façade and the single block pierced doorway. There is evidence of at least 5 attempts to loot the tomb but in spite of this a fine selection of gold remained in the tomb. Don't forget that the trees may affect your GPS readings, particularly when it's windy. We averaged the coordinates using two different methods so they are as accurate as possible. PLEASE REPLACE THIS CACHE EXACTLY WHERE YOU FOUND IT!
