Rabid Chipmunks: This one is down for the count! I won't make it back up anytime soon, so I'm going to archive it. Maybe some day we'll take another stroll up this hill.

Geocache Description:

Tryon Peak, at 3,234 feet high, was a marker on a boundary negotiated between Governor William Tryon and the Cherokee Indians in 1767. Needless to say, the settlers continued to violate this treaty. On this ridge, there are several communication towers and a fire tower.

From the ridge leading to Tryon Peak, one can see in virtually every direction and can view most of Polk County in addition to peaks as far away as Mt. Mitchell. This is what makes it an excellent vantage point for a sniper set on destruction. We need your help in discovering and stopping this assassin. The sniper has been ruthless and is quite good at getting multiple targets in rapid succession.

There is a road that leads to the ridge for maintenance of radio towers but you cannot take this way as the sniper will be watching that route. You will need to follow an old logging road in order to sneak up on the assassin. The coordinates for the parking spot are below. From here you can follow the old logging road.

Above are the coordinates for the first attack. At this location you need to discover information that will, hopefully, lead you closer to the sniper. The victims have been bagged and placed under large rocks for the moment. Do not spend your valuable time trying to bring them back down as we will send recovery teams to retrieve the bodies when it is safe. We need you to continue on your mission. Please be very careful with all evidence and replace just as you found it.

The terrain in this area is rugged and wild, so be careful at all times. It is highly unlikely you will encounter any civilians during this mission. For those agents considering this assignment, please bear in mind that this mission will be about 3-4 hours total with 1400 feet of elevation gain.

After you have been debriefed, take some time to rest and enjoy the view from up here.

This mission is very important so we have included information below to assist you.

About 100 yards up the logging trail you need to take the left fork and then the right fork. This will take you in the correct direction. After the first attack, follow the logging road for as long as you can and head up whenever it does. Once it stops, try to follow wildlife trails. Those are better than total bushwhacking. The second attack will be the toughest to locate, read the hint, if needed. After the second crime scene, DO NOT head for the 3rd, it is much too steep. Head for the intermediate waypoint 1 below, After that, go towards intermediate waypoint 2. At this point, you should find another logging road. Stay on that.

You do need to bring some equipment.
