East of the cache is Calumet Harbor, which was a busy steamport 100 years ago.
The peninsula you are standing on was part of the Henry Bergen farm, and in 1921, the Rotary Club of Fond du Lac bought the property for use as a Boy Scout Camp.
The Scouts named it "Shaginappi", which is the Algonquin word for 'buckskin'. Small cabins were built, but in 1955, the Boy Scouts of America encouraged tent camping in place of cabins, so the Giddings & Lewis Company bought 93 additional acres of the Bergen farm to add to the park.
