Geocache Description:

Sunday, October 24th

1 :00pm - 4:00pm

Boulder County Open Space has approached the geocaching community, and is looking for our help!
BCOS has asked the Geocaching community for help, and has provided us with another opportunity to 'give back' by volunteering your time!

In addition to trash pickup, we'll be helping with seed collection. The fall is a busy time for volunteer projects, with a very limited time where native plants and seeds can be collected. Locally collected seed is exceptionally valuable because it is well adapted to local soils and climate and it cannot be purchased. Collected seed will be used to complete ecological restoration projects throughout Boulder County (Possibly to be used for rehabilitation of areas affected by the Fourmile Canyon Fire).

The exact location of our seed collection project is yet to be determined. Parks and Open Space Plant Ecologists are constantly scouting many different species of native plant at several different properties to determine their ripeness. Scouting will continue over the next several weeks to ensure that the seed we end up collecting is at the peak or ripeness in the particular location. We will meet at the designated area and caravan to the exact project site.

What You Should Bring:
We will be working in uneven terrain, off of the normal trail. Please wear sturdy shoes, sneakers are generally okay, but please no sandals. Since we may be working around a lot of trees and shrubs, long pants are recommended. Also, storms can develop quickly so please bring clothes suitable for working in a variety of conditions (think layers).

Checklist:
Drinking water in a reusable bottle
Sunscreen
Work shoes/boots
Long pants
Layers of clothes
Rain gear
Binoculars/camera (optional)

Boulder County will provide
Light snacks
Large jug of drinking water
First aid kit
All necessary tools

In addition, we are currently looking into a volunteer opportunity in the spring in response to the Fourmile Canyon Fire. Let's show them today how active and involved our community can be!
