Doctor Who - The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

zargfinders: Over the years, this cache has required maintenance 10 times. It's rather toxic to make. So, unfortunately, since it went missing again, we decided it's time for this cache to go. The clue is now included in the description of the Final cache of the series.

The cache can be accessed from the Manly Warringah War Memorial Park (Manly Dam) where ample free parking is available. The parking lot in Section 4 is the closest to the cache. However, the walking trail can be accessed from various other places if you want a longer walk. The park is open from 7am to 5:30pm. If the park is closed, the cache can also be accessed from Warringah Street in North Balgowlah where there is free street parking.

The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe Synopsis
(Doctor Who Christmas Special, 2011)

It's Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home. He promises to repay her kindness - all she has to do is make a wish. Three years later, a devastated Madge escapes war-torn London with her two children for a dilapidated house in Dorset. She is crippled with grief at the news her husband has been lost over the channel, but determined to give Lily and Cyril the best Christmas ever. The Arwells are surprised to be greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world. Here, Madge will learn how to be braver than she ever thought possible. And that wishes can come true...

Cache Information

The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe is a traditional cache located just off a trail that connects the Wakehurst Golf Course to the Wildflower Walk (part of the Circuit Track) at Manly Dam. This track can be accessed (without any bushbashing!) from at least two points within Manly Dam. There are also 2 access points off Warringah Street in North Balgowlah and another off Manning Street. Please refer to the Manly Dam Walking Map for more details.

The cache is a bison tube that only has room for the log sheet. The clue is written at the top of the log sheet. Please bring your own writing utensil!

The bush where the cache is hidden is not very dense. So it is possible to find the cache without really disturbing any plants. The satellite gods were not very nice to us when we took the coordinates. We did manage to get within a couple of metres of the cache. So hopefully the coordinates work for you! Please feel free to add alternate coordinates to your log.

Please Note: This cache has a TB for the FTF to collect and move on. As there is no room for it in the cache itself, it has been hidden elsewhere in a 200ml Sistema container. Perhaps it will be found before the cache! If not, there are instructions for where to find it inside the cache.

IMPORTANT

  • Bring your own writing utensil.
  • Don't forget to write down the clue (which is written on the log sheet)!
  • Please replace the cache exactly as you found it.
  • No spoilers please!

About Manly Dam Reserve

From Wikipedia:

Manly Dam Reserve (also known as the Manly-Warringah War Memorial Park) is an area of urban bushland in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney, Australia. It is within the suburbs of Allambie Heights and Manly Vale in Warringah.

The Reserve adjoins the south-eastern edge of Garigal National Park, and to the reserve's east lies Wakehurst Golf Course.

The Reserve is centred around a man-made lake officially called 'Manly Reservoir', but it is more widely known as 'Manly Dam' after the dam that created it. Curl Curl Creek was originally dammed in 1892 to create a deep freshwater lake. It was intended to provide a permanent supply of fresh water for the nearby village of Manly. The original dam wall was subsequently raised in 1909 and in 1922 to 35.1 metres (115 ft) to provide up to 1.7 gigalitres (370,000,000 imp gal) of drinking water. However as the population of the area grew, the dam's capacity became insufficient.

Water supply from Manly Dam was phased out by 1930 when piping began from the Pymble reservoir. Briefly in 1942 after a period of drought, pumps were reinstalled and Manly Dam was brought back into service for nearly 10 months. In the early 1990s engineers installed a large enclosed powered propeller against the dam wall on the reservoir side to prevent silt building up against the wall and causing damage to the structure. The propeller's purpose is also to prevent stratification of the water body, thereby preventing eutrophication.

Manly Dam is home to a wide variety of well maintained walking tracks, and a single mountain bike circuit of around 9km. The mountain bike circuit is one of the only legal "Single Tracks" available in Sydney, which makes it a very popular destination for Sydney mountain bike riders. Due to the popularity of the cycling circuit local park rangers have installed a number of wooden boardwalks at various points and ask riders via emails and communication with clubs to stay off the track during and immediately after periods of rain.

Great work on the FTF Slaytornator! Perseverance pays off!
