Aravaipa Canyon is one of Arizona's great natural attractions. Located near Safford, the 19,410 acre Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness is situated 120 miles southeast of Phoenix in Graham and Pinal counties. The wilderness includes the 11-mile long Aravaipa Canyon, surrounding tablelands and nine side canyons. Enclosed by 1,000 foot high canyon walls with a perennial desert stream flowing through it, the canyon supports an extraordinary abundance and diversity of vegetation and wildlife, including over 200 species of birds.
This area is administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and access to hikers and backpackers is restricted to 50 people per day. A permit is required for hiking or backpacking in the canyon. Contact the Safford Field Office at (928) 348-4400 or the Public Lands Information Center in downtown Phoenix at (602) 417-9300 for information on how to acquire a permit.
