Kirkon historia Kirkon piirrustukset laati konduktööri Pehr W. Palmroth vuonna 1795. Rakentaminen aloitettiin vuonna 1806 ja kirkkoa rakennettiin kattolistojen korkeudelle vuoteen 1808 asti, jolloin Suomen sota keskeytti rakennustyöt. Sodan aikana venäläiset käyttivät keskeneräistä kirkkoa hevostallina vallattuaan Kuopion. Tarinan mukaan amiraali Sandels vei vetäytyessään Toivalaan kaikki alueen veneet, ja miehittäjät käyttivät kirkon isoja puupenkkejä lauttojen rakennusaineena pyrkiessään Toivalaan prikaatin kimppuun onnistumatta kuitenkaan aikeissaan. Rakennustöitä päästiin jatkamaan vasta 1812 ja kirkko valmistui 1816. Tyyliltään Kuopion tuomiokirkko edustaa 1800-luvun alun uusklassismia. Muodoltaan kivikirkko on tasavartinen ristikirkko. Itäpäädyssä kirkkoa on torni ja lännessä alttari. Kirkkoa on korjattu 1866, 1877, 1895, 1925 sekä 1961. Kirkon korkeus on kellotornin kattoon mitattuna 35,5 metriä, korkeutta Kallaveden pinnasta on 56,4 m ja merenpinnasta 138,20 m. Kirkonkelloja on kaksi, vuosilta 1928 ja 1951. Kuopion tuomiokirkon pääurut on rakentanut tanskalainen Bruno Christensen & Sønner Orgelbyggeri vuonna 1986 ja niissä on 52 äänikertaa, kolme sormiota ja jalkio. Kuoriurut on rakentanut ruotsalainen Robert Gustavsson Orgelbyggeri AB vuonna 2003. Alttaritaulun "Kristus ristillä" on maalannut Pietarissa suomalainen Berndt Abraham Godenhjelm. Alttaritaulun lahjoitti kirkkoon 1843 kirkkoherra ja teologian tohtori Matthias Ingman. HUOM! ÄLÄ KOSKE kirkon seinän juurella oleviin kiviin! Kätkö ei sijaitse niiden alla. History of the cathedralThe cathedral was drawn by Pehr W. Palmroth in 1795. Construction was started in 1806 and went on until 1808 when it was interrupted by the Finnish war. During the war Russian cavalry used unfinished cathedral as a horse stable after they occupied Kuopio city. The story tells that finnish admiral Sandels took all the boats from the area while withdrawing to Toivala. Russian cavalry had to use cathedral benches to make rafts in order to follow and attack admiral Sandels´s troops. However the plan did not work. Construction work continued in 1812 to be finished in 1816.The Cathedral has 1091 square meters of floor space and almost 1 500 seats. It represents a neoclassical style from early 18th century being a symmetrical cross church. The bell tower is located at the east wing and the altar at the west wing. Cathedral has been renovated in 1866, 1877, 1895, 1925 and 1961. The hight of the bell tower is 35,5 meters, elevation from lake Kallavesi 56,4 meters and from sea level 138,20 meters. The bell tower has two bells made in 1928 and 1951. Main organs built by a danish company Bruno Christensen & Sønner Orgelbyggeri in 1986 has 52 organ stops, three keyboards and pedal board. Chancel organs were built by swedish company Robert Gustavsson Orgelbyggeri AB in 2003. The altar painting is called "Kristus ristillä" (Christ crucified) painted in St. Petersburg by a finnish artist Berndt Abraham Godenhjelm. The painting was donated by a vicar and a doctor of theology Matthias Ingman in 1843. PAY ATTENTION: DO NOT MOVE the stones beside the church wall! Cache is not there, the hint means something else.
