Geocache Description:

This log had been viewed    times since 27th January 2005

***PLEASE READ BEFORE CACHING***

The co-ordinates listed for this log are for  PARKING and are not the location of the cache.

Intro...

'The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) has been central to the defence of the United Kingdom for more than 50 years, providing and maintaining the warheads for the country's nuclear deterrent. Uniquely among the nuclear powers, AWE covers the whole life cycle of nuclear warheads, in a single establishment. This includes initial concept and design, through component manufacture and assembly, to in-service support and, finally, decommissioning and disposal.'

'AWE Burghfield occupies a 225 acre site, seven miles east of Aldermaston. It was established during World War II to manufacture munitions. Later it was used as a storage depot for the Ministry of Supply until the early 1950's, when its facilities and proximity to Aldermaston made it an obvious choice to support the expanding nuclear weapons programme. Today, Burghfield is responsible for the final assembly of warheads, their in-service maintenance and their eventual decommissioning.'

Now for the cache...

This cache is located near to the AWE (Atomic Weapons Establishment) at Burghfield. It is a mystery cache which requires you to find the other four caches in our 'quintet' dotted around the Burghfield area. In each of the caches there is card with part of a set of co-ordinates on it. Once you have all four, you have the completed co-ordinates to go find!

Terrain...

The paths seem pretty good, but there is some mud, so don't try it in your new white trainers! Cachers with buggies may struggle towards the end, but I don't think it's impossible!

Parking...

There's a few options for parking. The co-ords for this log will take you to some 'verge' parking reasonably close to the cache.

If you don't wish to go near the AWE, parking is available in the car park of the Old Bell in Goring lane. Please be careful when crossing the road from here as cars can be very fast.
