Geocache Description:

This forty-seventh cache of the “Caerphilly Collection” requires the solution of some cryptic clues to determine its coordinates. Expect a walk of about 2 miles with 150’ of ascent, on good tracks through mixed woodland. The cache, in a medium size plastic lunch box, is hidden within 5 miles of the reference coordinates, which are at the former Cefn Mably Hospital (now a select residential development), the southern extremity of the Council area.

The Caerphilly Collection is comprised of 50 caches, each distinguished with a unique CC number. The caches vary in difficulty and type and usually have other “C” word connections – castle, cheese, coal, canal, etc. There may even be Cryptic Clues for Clever Clogs! The current Caerphilly unitary authority grew out of the former Rhymney Valley and Islwyn Councils and stretches from the outskirts of Cardiff and Newport in the south to the Brecon Beacons, north of Rhymney. Despite a past dominated by coal and heavy industry, it has a diverse history and varied and dramatic scenery. We hope you will enjoy exploring it with us.

CC48 is an “Accumulator” cache, the location of which is given in coded form. The translation details of the code are distributed around the whole Collection, but only about a quarter of the caches contain a piece of the code, which will be found on the back of the Log Book. To do the Accumulator, you will need to keep a note of each piece of code that you find. Unless you are very lucky, you will need to find the majority of the Collection in order to do the Accumulator. The Accumulator cache is hidden in an area of difficult terrain and demanding navigation, with a rating of 5, 4½.

This, indeed, is the cache with the cryptic clues – and with a choice of only ten answers, they are a compiler’s challenge (and another possible meaning for CC!). But here they are:
A. About and within the crowd sometimes.
B. The saintless little rock takes on the night bird’s starter.
C. Seen post watershed that is exchanged.
D. It’s not wood that you can see for the trees.
E. About the noteless line.
F. C has lost its bearing.
G. One of the two farmer Mac had before nothing with goat, hen and turkey for starters.
H. Not dead, without a lie.

The cache can be found at N 51 AB.CD3 W 003 EF.GH0

It is suggested that you start from the car park at N 51 AB.CF4 W 003 EF.DE5. For a relatively easy walk, stick to the main forest tracks, even though they take a roundabout route to the cache. If you feel more adventurous, there are plenty of alternative paths, which may be shorter – but they will also have steep, rough or muddy sections and some may be overgrown, so add one to the terrain rating: you have been warned! The forest is not all conifers, so look out for some trees with "character". If you pick a clear day, there are capital views from the vicinity of the cache.

This cache is on Forestry Commission land, set up in accordance with their guidelines. Generally, these are the same as for any other cache, basically requiring sensible and responsible behaviour. However, because forestry operations can be dangerous, the Commission may close access at any time, in which circumstances all warning signs should be obeyed.
