Remember When...Dow A.F.B. Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

mainiac1957: I am sadly going to Archive this one as it is now closely watched by a huge encampment of homeless people. Someday when the city cleans us up I will consider putting a new one out. Thanks to all who have found it over the many years it's been there.

Geocache Description:

If you’ve been living in the Bangor area for any length of time you remember Dow Air Force Base. It was originally opened as Dow Air Field in 1941 and closing for good in 1968. Boasting a runway of 11,437 feet it is one of the longest on the east coast, and is one of the emergency landing locations for the space shuttle

It was home of the 4083rd Strategic Wing, which flew B-52Gs from the base from May of 1960 to February of 1963. Most likely this is the Dow we remember the best. One of my most vivid memories is of the red and white water tower with the revolving beacon. Going on trips to Bangor after dark and seeing the beacon or the old landing lights at the end of the runway were always a thrill for a kid in the cold war 60’s. Near this water tower is where I have placed this cache. It is on the side of the gate that we are allowed to be on. There is no reason to travel far from the road to find it. It is a small container with only room for the log sheet and a small pencil.
