Geocache Description:

The “Kardiovastazousa” Madonna (who holds the heart)

The small wood roofed church of the Madonna(Panayia) is situated on a height over the western end of the village Kaminaria and is dated in the 16th century. In the past the temple suffered deterioration several times and part of its roof was destroyed and rebuilt probably at the beginning of the 19th century. It was fixed again in the mid 1970s by the Archaeological Department.Originally the church was filled with writings on the walls but with the passing of time a lot of its frescos which many had western influences and dated back to the first quarter of the 16th century were destroyed. One of the most important frescos is the one situated on the quarter sphere section of the arch within the temple which depicts the Madonna with her hands raised in a praying position and Jesus which is salvaged in very good condition. It carries the inscription “Kardiovastazousa” (who holds the heart).
