Geocache Description:

This is a 10 - 15 minute walk along a rough trail and shallow stream followed by a final steep scramble to the target.

Burrington Coombe nestles on the most northerly slopes of the Mendip Hills. The coombe is at the foot of Black Down, a dark & imposing hill which, at 325m is the highest point on the Mendips and for those energetic enough for the hike affords superb views over the Severn across to South Wales and as far up river as the Severn Bridge near Avonmouth.

The area is famous amongst the subterranean explorers as a cavers paradise particularly for those new to the sport as the coombe and its surroundings have numerous caves of varying difficulties. In my younger days I have been down many of them!
The cache is up the West Twin Brook valley where several cave entrances will be passed en route. A well used trail (used mainly by cavers) follows the brook about 400m up, then its a steep scramble to the cache.
Parking is available at 200m north of the cache in the coombe.
A POINT ON THE ECOLOGY OF THE AREA.
There is much wear to the paths in the area, largly due to the caving fraternity. Please keep to the paths wherever possible, particularly when the bracken is growing in spring & summer. The cache is placed among young scrub which is not indigenous to the area as, until a few decades ago,it was kept under control by native goats & sheep. Fairly recently local conservation bodies have re-introduced these animals in the Cheddar Gorge area in order to control the unwanted scrub & reverse the process to produce the natural barren Karst Limestone
features of the landscape. Happy hunting!
