Chrysler Plant- Newark

Location

From its early start in 1951, the Chrysler Newark Plant has been a major part of the First State's economy. The first vehicle made here was the Patton M-48 Medium Battle Tank. Over 30,000 tanks were made here in a few short years, most shipped overseas for duty in Korea and Vietnam. Some were still in use up until the mid 80's!

After the war production ended, Chrysler used the plant to build numerous styles of vehicles. Here is a small list of the cars produced here:

Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, Aspen, Acclaim/Spirit, LeBaron/Diplomat, LeBaron/Saratoga, LeBaron Coupe, LeBaron Convertible, Concorde, Dart/Lancer, Durango, Intrepid/Volare/Aspen, Reliant/Aries, and Valiant.

Having made millions of vehicles over the years, with the push on for more economical cars and green vehicles, Chrysler decided to finally close the plant in 2008. This location was also a major parts distribution hub for the central east coast area serving MD, PA, DE, NY, VA, WV, OH, NC, and SC.

After closing both locations, the plant sat idle for about one year. Finally, the University of Delaware acquired the property. After a quite extensive environmental cleanup, the land will be used for research and economic studies. Partnerships have already been announced with Thomas Jefferson University, the US Army, and Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

As Patrick Harker, President of UD says, "We see great potential economic development and community infrastructure enhancement initiatives that will have a tremendously positive impact on the city, the state and the region."
