Now disused, the Lagan Navigation Canal was completed in 1794 and operated with varying degrees of success before being finally closed to through traffic in 1954. This section in Lagan Valley Regional Park still has a complex network of lock walls, cut-off channels and weirs, adjoining the river itself.
Directions: You can combine this with another cache, from one of two possible parking spots: for "Luke's Last Cache" (GCKFBA) park at N54º 32.073 W5º 59.051, off the Upper Malone Road (B103), at Drumbeg. For "Kidsfun" (GC3AB3) park at Shaw's Bridge, Malone: N54º 33.154 W5º 57.201 The cache route is suitable for wheelchair users, though it's a long run and some assistance would be needed to retrieve the box. Please be sure to conceal all valuables and lock your car before leaving it. The setting: When the canal was in operation, this low point on the route was subject to flooding, especially in winter. Complicated water management measures were necessary if the barges were to be kept moving, and the remains of these cuts locks and channels form the main interest in this cache setting. There is more information on the canal's construction and history HERE.
