Geocache Description:

The full moon (tatkresiwok - Inuit) occurs when the Sun and the Moon are opposite sides of the Earth at the same time. This lunar phase (29.53 days/cycle) is known by many different names, cultures, and religions, depending on the month it occurs. The late Fall full moon occurs in December and is known as the Oak Moon (English), Cold Moon (Algonquian), Sharad Purnima is celebrated (Hindu), and Unduvap Poya (Sinhala).

The full moon for the month of December is at its fullest at 4:27am on Saturday the 6th.

Full Moon

...and the sun sets at 4:40pm and the moon rises at 5:18pm.

This is just about the best night to view the moon at its fullest, after it rises today! Come join us for a meet-n-greet in the evening and to watch the full moon rise over the San Gabriel mountains.

The event begins at 5:00 pm (after the sun sets this time) and the event will end at 8:00 pm (well after the moon risen). This month's event will be held at the Claremont Round Table Pizza at Baseline and Mills.

Please do bring your bugs and coins for trading, discovering, or just to show them off. There are no food or beverages nearby, so if it's a little chilly there's usually some hot cocoa, and at recent events people have brought snacks, "other" beverages, and (cold) pizza to share with all. On warm days, there are usually some cold beverages and the pizza stays hot! If you plan on bringing something to share, be sure to post it in a note. Please remember to dress appropriately for the temperature and weather conditions, as this event is outdoors and rain or shine. The terrain is mostly dirt shoulder/pullout parking so wheelchairs may find it difficult, but the location is suitable for handicapped viewing the full moon from a vehicle.

It is interesting to note that often, calendars indicating moon phases may be off by a day when intended for use in a different time zone. Don't be late or you just might miss out on this magical time as the sun sets and the full moon rises.

To celebrate the holidays, we'll have a White Elephant or Pink Elephant (or whatever color your elephant is) Gift Exchange during the event. Let's keep this below the ten buck mark. Re-gifting last year's holiday, b-day or wedding gifts are encouraged. No food to avoid allergies etc. If you are participating in this, be sure to wrap your present and to wrap it inside out or with plain paper. We'll go over how it works at the event if you've never played before.

Today is Saint Nicholas Day! In 343, Saint Nicholas died. St. Nicholas (or Santa Claus) is said to leave little presents in children's shoes. In honor of this day, if you have shoes and socks (new) for children in need we will collect them and donate them to children who need them. 'Tis the reason for the season.

You are in no way obligated to bring anything when attending this event. The only requirement is that you show up.

On this day...
in 1865 the thirteenth amendment is ratified, banning slavery in the U.S.
in 1884 the Washington Monument is completed
in 1917 Finland declares independence from Russia;
in 1967 the first human heart transplant if performed in the U.S.
in 1958 Nick Park is born (creator of Wallace & Gromit)
and in 1988, Roy Orbison died.
