1790's Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

JustKev: Well, this cache was one of our favorites to place because it told a bit of a story on the history of the area it was in here in Belgrade. Unfortunately, the container decided it was time to give up the ghost - all for locking tabs are now gone - and the poison ivy was encroaching on the location. Most of the contents were completely destroyed when the container filled with water so the cache is gone and we're archiving due to the encroachment of the nasty weed.

Geocache Description:

This is a regular cache hidden near a 1790's farmhouse in Belgrade, Maine.

The ground floor of the house in the background of this cache was built in the 1790’s. At that time Belgrade was not the same place you see today. Far from it in fact, as the town only had about 160 people spread over a wide area. (While quite a few of the family names of these early settlers still exist in Belgrade, it is surprising how many have disappeared.) Six years after that first count, the population grew to about two hundred and fifty. At that time, this was considered to be a fairly large town. The house looks much different than that original structure as rooms and sections were added and changed over the years to accommodate the ever growing family. A farming family the Dunn family and its descendants lived on this road till the about 2 years ago. And some are still buried in a plot on a hill up the road from this house.

For a much more detailed history of the town please go to (visit link) There are some fascinating facts there and is where I got some of the information for this cache.

This cache is our first hide. Please feel free to email us if you know of something not done correctly. The land owners have given permission for the cache but don’t be surprised if someone from the house is peeking out at you as they take great pleasure in watching people play hide and seek with Tupperware! Parking on the roadside is ok but please be careful of traffic. Although this road doesn’t see a lot of traffic, cars don’t always obey the posted speed limit. This is the road to the town dump as well so more muggles will be around on those days the dump is open.
This is a lock n lock container with some goodies for kids of all ages in it. Just off the road a bit so young child friendly too.
The FTF prizes include
Nintendo DS game Pirates of the Caribbean (rated 14 yrs old and older)(used)
Radio, flashlights, stuffed toys, mini playing cards, puzzles, notepads etc…

Happy Caching!
