Geocache Description:


I named this cache for the sandstone outcroppings located on the mountain ridge. It is located off the Foothills Parkway in Cocke County, TN. You get there by taking Exit 443 off I40, or by turning off of Hwy. 32/321 near Cosby. Be sure and stop at the pull-offs on your way up the mountain and enjoy the views.

Park at N35 48.922, W083 13.157. The trail is visible from there. Parking is on National Park property but the cache is located well inside the Cherokee National Forest.

The first 1/3 mile of the trail follows a fire break cut to help fight the fire which damaged lots of trees on the ridge. It's good to see the trees and understory that survived and/or are recovering. Continue from there out the ridgeline.

Total walking distance is 1.5 miles (there & back), so wear your hiking boots. There are lots of large yellow pine cones along the trail in case you'd like to collect some for decorating your home. I walked up on a drumming grouse on my way to place this cache and watched his courtship antics for quite some time. I heard several others drumming in the distance.

The cache is in a plastic rubbermaid box measuring 6X5X9 inches. It is well hidden so I'm confident it will never be found accidently. Please, no food items in the cache. This is bear country!

Original contents are: recipe card; toy duck w/mirror; snaplight light stick; toy snake; pocket knife; whistle; toy car; sewing kit; canoeing decal; velco strap; matches; candle; little book of useful internet sites.
