Geocache Description:

An enormous 600 year old tree, allegedly the oldest oak tree in NJ. Cache was taken over by Peconic Bay sailors from azog 03/22/2003...

This is an enormous 600 year old oak tree, considered to be the oldest in NJ. It is listed in several registries. Rumor has it that George Washington picniced here underneath it's branches.

This behemoth tree is shored up with steel cables and support beams, to keep it from collapsing under it's own weight.

Historically, the tree forms the center of Basking Ridge, which was a colonial town that extended only a few blocks from where you now stand. Most of the houses have been transformed into local businesses, while keeping the period architecture intact.

The tree is in an historical graveyard in which more than 30 Revolutionary War soldiers are buried. It's also an active church site, so please walk with respect on both counts.

Verification can be in two ways:

#1 - Mail or post a picture of the tree with your GPSR in the shot.

#2 - You can also verify by turning to bearing 260 degrees and walking about 100 feet. Be careful walking across the road. This is the Basking Ridge circle, and a memorial rock is in the center. On the opposite side are a list of names. Send me the very first name on the registry.

Please don't post method #2 on the log.
