Geocache Description:

It's that time of year again!  Time for another trip to the Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike in Breezewood, Pennsylvania!  Welcome to TheRichFather's Sixth Annual Turnpike Adventure!

As always, the day will begin at 9AM sharp for the breakfast portion of the event.  The breakfast will be held at Perkins Restaurant at Pilot Travel Plaza. During breakfast, all geocaching topics are fair game.

Upon the conclusion of breakfast, we will make our way to the parking area of the Abandoned Turnpike and take the group photo. Carl DeFabo will be joining us this year from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and will be doing a short presentation on the history of the Turnpike and the building of the tunnels, the South Penn Railroad right of way, why the area was bypassed, and the usage of the road after it was closed. The presentation will be short, but I would like to keep the group together until the presentation is finished. Then the bikers can take off on bikes and the rest of us on foot.

The ones hiking will hike out to the Rays Hill Tunnel and then from there will decide whether to hike out to Sideling Hill or to return to the cars and drive to the other end where the old rest stop resides and hike from there to Sideling Hill (2+ mile hike ). The bike ride takes roughly 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace. Those of us doing the hike will likely take all day. Comfortable shoes are a must.

We will explore the two abandoned tunnels along the trail, as well as discovering the inner workings of the old tunnels.

Credit for this cache may be obtained by either attending the breakfast or attending the hike/bike.

Last year we had about 50 people at this event and it was a hoot.  Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee that we will have zombies in the tunnels this year... or can I?  MUAHAHAHAHAHA! *NOTE* I'm hoping to have everyone out of the restaurant and to the top of the hill at the Breezewood Abandoned Turnpike parking area by 1030 for the presentation by Mr. DeFabo. If you're just coming for the hike/bike, please plan to be there at 10:30. If we're running late, bear with us!*NOTE*
