Geocache Description:

You are looking for a Reg. size ammo can placed out on the Heritage Nature Trail behind the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center. Be sure to visit the museum (free of charge) and sign the visitors log. Make a note you were there geocaching. (You do need a recreational passport for you vehicle to park at the Carl T. However)

The area where this cache is placed is known to have several Pileated Woodpeckers spotted in trees and flying around. This Woodpecker is the largest in the United States, with the exception of the possibly extinct Ivory - Billed Woodpecker. Mature adults are 16" to 19" long and can have a wingspan of 26" - 30". They are mainly black bodied with a red crest, and a white line down the sides of their throat. Adult males will have a red line from their bill to the throat; in adult females this will be black.

The Pileated Woodpecker eats mainly insects, especially carpenter ants and wood boring beetle larvae, but will also eat fruits, nuts, and berries. (Including Poison Ivy berries.) They chip out large rectangular shaped holes while searching for insects and lap them up with their long tongues.

Ususally the Pileated Woodpecker will make their nests in the cavities of dead trees. The roost will have several entrance holes. In April, The large rectangular shaped hole made by the male will attract a female for mating and raising their young. The female will usually lay 3 to 5 eggs. Once the young are raised, They will abandon the hole and will not use it again.
