Geocache Description:

This micro shouldn't be too tough unless the area is buzy. Since the place itself is new it is hard to judge how much traffic it will get.

For those of you not familiar with recent Jax Beach history, there used to be a pier here (one of the few privately owned piers on the Atlantic Coast). It was one of the reasons we bought our house nearby. Someone on the city council decided that the city should own it and mounted a harrasment campaign against the owners. Citations for code vilotions and such. This is a common theme for developement in this sleepy little beach community. Word got around that the pier was in trouble and public pressure built for the city to "save the pier" (right). Then came hurricanes Floyd and Irene. The owner, under preasure from the city and having sustained major damage from the storms finally gave in. The city bought the pier and promised to rebuild it within a year (this was four years ago). Soon the idea was floated that maybe the pier should be built in a different location. Coincidentally at a location adjacent to property owned by several members of the council. Gee, how fortunate for them. Against great local opposition, the council voted relocate the pier and were backed up by the mayor and the Jacksonville City Council. Since then the remainder of the pier was burned down under mysterious circumstances and gound has recently been broken on the new pier, though permiting is not complete. Jax beach no longer will have a quaint nieghborhood fishing pier, but a fancy dancy tourist attraction in the central business district (where, by the way, the polititians own land and businesses). But hey, we did get this beautiful park. Maybe that will shut us up.
