The Elves Tree a Raccoon Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

The Leprechauns: Today I hiked many a mile to pick up all the containers for the "Four Corners" geocaches. It's been a great three years for these. No missing caches, no damage to the area, nothing but fun and good hiking.

I hope that with the park now opened up for new caches, that someone else will hide some for me to find. If nobody does, I scouted out some cool spots today. Raccoon Creek is such a beautiful park and there should be more geocaches here.

Thank you to all who visited, and wrote all the nice logs. That is why I hide caches.

Geocache Description:

This cache is one of our "Four Corners" series of geocaches, designed to introduce you to the trail system in each corner of Raccoon Creek State Park. It was set up for the Earth Day Cleanup Event Cache held on April 26th, 2003, with the cooperation of the park management.

This two-part multicache introduces you to the Forest Trail, running along the north side of Raccoon Lake. Go to the Friends of Raccoon Creek website to see a trail map. The coordinates posted above are for the first microcache, a one-pint Rubbermaid container that holds the coordinates to the final cache. Looking at the map, you may be tempted to park at the western trailhead by Route 18, and proceed east on the Forest Trail. Check the contour lines on a topo map carefully before making this decision, and also note that the final cache may not be conveniently close to the microcache. The HIGHLY recommended parking is on the north side of the dam in the lot near the trailhead at N40° 30.554' W080° 23.329'. Use the restroom before you depart, as it's the last sign of civilization you'll see for awhile, except for some trail and road intersections and the ruins of a small quarry operation.

This cache hunt requires a total hike of approximately 4 miles over challenging terrain, as several creeks have cut ravines that you must cross. Bring plenty of water and enjoy the hike. The second and final stage of this multicache is a painted ammo box, containing lots of goodies to reward you for the long journey, including a $10 Gander Mountain gift card for the first finder.

When this cache was placed, a raccoon led the way on one section of the trail (see pictures below). That is the inspiration for the name of this cache. Be very careful if you try to catch a treed raccoon on this cache hunt. Be sure to grab his tail, or you'll lose him!

New logging rule effective 12/10/05: Logs mentioning any commercial offsite game not approved by Groundspeak, Inc., are subject to deletion by the cache owner.
