Dew Crisp

This cache was placed as part of The Cradle Caper, an event hosted in the Cradle of Humankind.

Remember the old childhood experiment involving an avocado, a couple of toothpicks and a glass of water? You would prick an avocado seed with the toothpicks and half-immerse it in a glass of water and a few days later roots would grow. This way of planting is referred to as passive hydroponics.

Hydroponics is defined as the growing of plants in sand, gravel or liquid, with added nutrients but without soil.

Hydroponic gardening is becoming a popular way to do farming in South Africa – it uses up to 70% less water than conventional soil farming, growth is faster, and it’s soil-free and therefore eliminates soil-borne diseases and pests such as rot or cutworm.

Dew Crisp farm uses different hydroponic methods for different types of vegetables - e.g for vine produce, sawdust is used with a drip system (the drip system drips about 10 drops of water into the sawdust to keep the dust moist). The farm plants vegetables such as lettuce, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes and a variety of herbs.

The cache is a micro-like container - with a twist - containing a log sheet only. The hide should be quite challenging for most. Please bring a pen or pencil to leave your mark.
