Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the extreme southern deserts of New Mexico about 25 miles west of the Texas/New Mexico state line. The ammo box container sits in a large lave rock pile not too far below the rim on the south end of Kilbourn Hole.

The purpose of this cache location is to get folks out to Kilbourne Hole. It is one of a series of large unexpected volcanic "sinkholes" located in the desert west of El Paso. This formation was once the exhaust vent of a large extinct volcano...in time it collapsed on itself and left the large deep depression that you will see. The area is rich with dark volcanic rock and crystalized minerals. Do a little rock hounding while you are there. The Chihuahan desert landscape, and Potrillo Mountains to the west are awesome and will make you feel hundreds of miles from any civilization. People like to target shoot out there...so wear bright colors. Watch for snakes, and bring water. Be careful...the lava rocks are sharp.

You'll be traveling about 20 miles of good dirt roads..a little washboarded...very doable by all 2WD vehicles in dry condtions. A few ROAD DIRECTIONS are in order: From I-10 take the Artcraft exit (Exit 8) and travel west into New Mexico (You'll be heading towards the National Weather Service's large white doppler radar dome on the horizon). Climb the west mesa and turn right at the 4 way stop atop the mesa onto Airport Rd (marked). Go only 2/10 mi and turn left onto Industrial (marked). Travel west about 3/10 mi...cross the railroad tracks and continue another 1/10 mi then turn right on Co Rd A17 (marked) (waypoint 31.51.451 / W106.41.585). This is where you go to dirt. Travel this road 11.2 miles...you'll be heading NW along the west side of the rail road tracks. At 11.2 mi (waypoint N31.58.262 / W106.49.169) turn left and head west on Co Rd A11. This is a narrower road with more turns in it. Travel this dirt road 8.9 miles to a turn that heads north directly towards Kilbourne Hole. There is a signpost at the turnoff (waypoint N31.57.270 / W106.57.684) but no sign. Travel about a third of a mile to the high point before the sharp dropoff; park here (waypoint N31.57.515 / W106.57.840). The cache is several hundred yards in the direction of about 290 degrees. The cache is on the opposite facing slope on the other side of the wash.

Cache location was tested on 5/11/08 with ORIGINAL coords in original GPS. It parked us directly on top of the ammo box!
