Geocache Description:

CACHE IS NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES - PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION

Welcome to the minesing swamp. I recommend planning a day around this canoe route. Canoeing from Hwy 90 to Hwy 26 will take 5-7 hours depending on how much you want to enjoy the trip. Bring water and food!

The Minesing Swamp has been deemed an “Area of Natural and Scientific Interest” by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, and has been designated as in internationally significant wetland by the worldwide RAMSAR convention. It is regarded in Ontario as a “Class 1 Provincially Significant Wetland” and as such, it is protected from disturbances, such as development. With the contributing area of the Nottawasaga Valley Watershed being approximately 1680 square kilometres in size, the ability to receive, store and slowly release water is considered by experts to be a fine example of a natural flood control reservoir. It can be blanketed with floodwater and ice, sometimes reaching 2m above normal levels. Without this function, damage to existing downstream populated areas would be a frequent and costly occurrence.

A long-term management plan is in place and the plan outlines authorized uses of the swamp and long term management strategies for the swamps many sensitive areas. Conservation efforts are ongoing and include the purchasing of privately owned land surrounding the swamp, and regulating and controlling access to the swamp.

The first cache will give the North Coordinates. The second cache will give the West Coordinates.
