Geocache Description:

IMPORTANT SEE THE FEBRUARY 18 UPDATE

If you wish to experience winter caching, this is the event for you. This year the walk to the islands will be on a Saturday.

You will be able to cross the ice to grab caches on Shediac Island or on Cocagne Island. If you have done those caches, bring your snowshoes anyway, because there are many new caches on the islands and there will be many other new caches in the woods and on trails in this area. If that is not your kind of caching, then venture out on our country roads to pick up some of the many caches that have been placed lately. Or, you may want to do a bit of urban caching in Shediac or try some puzzles in the Shediac to Bouctouche area.

THEME
The theme for this year's event is

THANK YOU HILLBILLY BOB

We wish to give recognition to Hillbilly Bob for his contribution to geocaching in South Eastern New Brunswick. Bob's numbers dont tell the full story of his dedication to caching. In addition to his high find and hide counts, Bob likely has a very very low DNF rate. Bob does not know how to give up.

We wish to give special note to Bob for introducing the geocaching community to the Dobson Trail. The entire 58 kms of the Dobwon Trail is covered in geocaches thanks to Bob's dedication.

So we want to bring his accomplishments to everyone's attention and thank him publicly for his dedication to geocaching.

YOUR CACHING DAY
The walk will begin at Ma & Pa's place at 9:00 am. The event will be going on all day so feel free to start later if that suits you better or if you already have many of the caches. You can park in the driveway or on the street, but please leave room for our neighbours to get by. Please check in with Ma & Pa before going out on the ice. Reference to a map may show you a shorter trip across to Shediac Island from roads to the west. One option is parking at Belladan's Water's Edge cache on Edgewater. The waypoint is below.

If heading to Cocagne Island, you may be able to carpool Note that you will have to go back to highway 11 as the bridge across the Cocagne River on highway 134 is being repaired. We have provided a waypoint for a parking spot for those going to Cocagne Island.

When you get back from the walk, come in, relax and enjoy the company of fellow cachers and trade stories of your day. We will have hot drinks, treats and sweets waiting for everyone. The following link will get you to THE THREE PREVIOUS ICE WALKS

EQUIPMENT AND ICE SAFETY
The walk across the ice to Shediac Island may take up to 45 minutes and you will not be protected from the elements. The walk across to Cocagne Island will take a bit less time. You will spend quite a bit of time looking for caches on the island and then you will have that same walk back. You should pace yourself and start back if you feel tired. After all, it is a long walk back. Please dress accordingly and bring additional clothing items that you may need. Extra mitts or hand warmers could be helpful as you will be exposing hands to open caches and signing logs. Because of the length of the walk, you should bring a lunch with you and also bring plenty of liquids. Snow is usually not deep on the ice so snowshoes are often not necessary to get over there. Once you are on the islands, snowshoes are very helpful.

The conditions are always changing but we will keep everyone informed. We never venture out on the ice without being as positive as we can about safety. We base it on the activity on the ice and the weather and we also venture over ourselves before the event. We will cancel if there is any doubt. Every year we wait till the commercial fishermen have been out on the ice with their trucks.

If heading to Shediac Island, cross to the North side from Ma & Pa's place or to the west side. On the island, travel from the North to the South along the trail on the West side of the Island. When you have done the caches on the South, return the way you came. DO NOT GO ON THE ICE ON THE SOUTH AND EAST SIDE OF THE ISLAND.

NEW CACHES
Many new caches have been placed in the area since the last event and there are more to come before the event.
**14 new caches on Shediac Island: A number of caches on Shediac Island have been replaced with newer traditional caches, both regular and micros. One Micro Logic has also been placed on the island.
**In the Scoudouc area there are nearly 40 new caches (by Belladan, incepit and us) including 25 on multi use trails, 7 at the back of the industrial park, and a number of puzzles. Here is the map CLICK HERE
**We have also placed a number of traditional and puzzle caches in and around Shediac in the last few months. Here is the map CLICK HERE
**Belladan hid a series of 26 caches in the Batemans Mills and Shediac Road area (Cach'n Round The Block). To see a map CLICK HERE
**There are about 30 new caches on a couple of service roads along the TCH between the Scoudouc exit and Memramcook. Theye were placed by CookerPhil&Lou, incepit and TheUltimateHunter. To see a map CLICK HERE
**There are a large number of puzzles placed recently in the area from Shediac up to Bouctouche

UPDATES On a regular basis, we will be providing updates on ice conditions, on the weather, on the event and on caches. So check back often.. .. ..

February 19
We received the following information from Martinwrench about Cocagne Island:
We went last week without any problems. We saw a 4 wheeler and ski-doo cross there yesterday. If the ice is safe over at your place, it should be safe here. If the tides are high, the water will go on the ice at the edges. Follow the edge where there's less water and it should be safe.

February 18

We are updating the cache page and MGA and ACGA to provide the following information. We went over to the island on Saturday and everything was OK. Monday there was a truck and skidoos on the bay so we know the ice is thick. However we want to advise everyone of the weather forecast and the conditions.

http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/CANB0090

We received about 25 cms of wet snow over the last couple of days The weather forecast says snow and/or rain everyday till Monday. We will not be cancelling the event but we want to ensure everyone is aware of the situation.

BTW There were skidoos on the ice today.

February 13
We crossed over to Shediac Island from the West with Belladan and performed maintenance on the caches on the North side. The entire island has now been checked. Snow conditions made snowshoes a good option.

February 11
There have been fishermen with trucks and snowmobiles out on the ice this week
February 4
There is now a lot of activity out on the ice. Pa crossed over to Shediac Island with Belladan and Gerald of Chignecto Duo. We spent over 5 hours there and checked on a large number of caches. We performed maintenance, replaced missing caches, replaced logs, removed a few caches and placed some new caches. See info in caches section above. In the past snowshoes were often not needed because of snowmobiles on the trails. This year snowshoes may be useful because obstacles on the trails have hindered snowmobiles.
.

February 1
After the warm spell and rain that we had a week or so ago, there was a truck out on the ice in the middle of the bay.
We have done maintenance on a large number of our local caches over the last few weeks and will be checking on more
We will be checking all the caches on Cocagne Island next week.
December 19
A snowmobile was out on the bay this morning
