Geocache Description:

Easy start of a six cache series. Get your stretching done, it's .84 miles to the last cache I placed!

I placed six caches in land owned by the Town of China now known as Thurston Park. This tract of 380 acres is bordered by the Albion and Palermo townlines on the north and east and by Bog Brook and the Yorktown Bog on the west. The Town of China acquired this property in 3 pieces for unpaid taxes in 1879. One parcel had unpaid taxes of $7.26 and another only $9.59. In 1974, the Town Selectman called a special town meeting and asked that the Yorktown land become a town recreation area and named it Thurston Park. This land was known for a long time as Negro Ridge and during the early 1900's many African Americans lived and farmed in this area. There are still remnants of pastures, cellar holes and a pauper's cemetary. This first cache is placed as a......well "you're already here anyway so let's save the world's energy reserves" cache! Congratulations to tandemstoker and shuman road searchers for the Co-FTF! By the sounds of the logs, you guys had a great time out there!
