Geocache Description:

Mount Laguna Observatory

When people think of a common location for viewing the stars, most everyone can think of the world famous Mount Palomar Observatory. There is another location, though it is less well known. That site is in our own Laguna Mountains and is sponsored by San Diego State University. In actuality, this complex has five observatories, four clustered on Mount Laguna and one smaller observatory in a valley due south of the complex. During the summer months the Mount Laguna Observatory is open to the public for tours and viewing the stars.

You will find ample parking at the Star Park Trailhead located at N 32.50.632 W 116.25.793. Make sure you have an Adventure Pass in order to park legally. From there you can follow a short trail to a paved road, which will lead you up to the complex. Please stay on the road and avoid the urge to take shortcuts. Once you reach the first waypoint you will find the coordinates to the final cache site. Take a moment to enjoy the view at the first waypoint. As you approach the cache site you will encounter a short trail. There should be no need to bushwack to the cache location, but you will have to geo-think the most correct path to the cache.

I not only wanted to make you aware of this nearby local resource, but to also honor those brave astronauts who gave their lives on the ill fated Space Shuttle Columbia. This cache is dedicated in their memory for the bravery and devotion to duty they all so richly exemplified. As a result this will be a theme cache and I would appreciate it if you left items dealing with aeronautics, space flight and/or astronomy. If you have any patriotic items to share that will be fine with me.

The initial cache contents are:
1. Mercury Redstone Rocket
2. Mercury Atlas Rocket
3. Gemini Titan Rocket
4. Space shuttle Discovery
5. Space Shuttle Enterprise
6. X-15
7. X-20 Dyna Soar (never actually flew)
8. X-24A Lifting Body
9. 5 assorted Space Shuttle mission patches
10. An American Flag patch with an eagle superimposed
11. A VFW Post 2802 lapel pin
