The Vallecito - Butterfield Stage Stop historical marker is one of the few remaining landmarks that remind us of the famous stage line of the 1850s and 1860s.
John Butterfield of New York was awarded the contract in 1859 to carry mail and people from San Francisco to the Mississippi River. His company spent a year planning and laying out the route. By the time the first stage was ready, Butterfierld Overland had 1500 employees, constructed 80 stations, purchased 200 mail wagons and owned 1,200 head of livestock.

The first trip started from San Francisco on September 15, 1858 and the first train carring mail left St. Louis the next day. The first cross country trip from St. Louis to San Francisco took 23 days, 23 and 1/2 hours.

The company suspended operations over this route when the Civil War started and moved this route North going thru Salt Lake City and Sacramento.

The completion of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1869 marked the end of the stage route.

Seems the "rangers" removed the cache because there was suposedly an illegal object (pottery) in the container. I'll speak to the natives and decide what to do.

I stopped here while wending my way home in Ventura County after a long drive from my parents' place in Escondido to Mission Bay to Ocotillo and then through Anza-Borrego to the freeway. Got some nice caches, including three in Imperial County for the CA County Challenge. Didn't realize that there were several DNFs here in the past week or so, so took a look around, but saw nothing like the hint. Gotta agree with the others; this seems to be gone, and it's time to check up on it.

Hey Bill, I think this is the one the rangers took, 'cause the Redux cache was still there on the 6th. Cya,
