Douro Estuary
After travelling hundreds of kilometres between cliffs and sharp bends, when the river reaches the estuary it begins to widen, reaching the sea between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
On one side, there is the historic city of Port that is also a World Heritage site and which has twice been elected the Best European Destination, with its typical streets and superb monuments. While on the other side of the river there are all the cellars where the precious port from the Douro Wine Region matures until it reaches the perfect age. Both cities are a must see for those in Northern Portugal.
The two sides of the river are joined by six magnificent bridges. The oldest ones are D. Maria Pia Bridge and D. Luis I Bridge, true works of art in iron, while the most recent bridges are Freixo, Arrábida, S. João and Infante. Modern, but equally beautiful.
Thousands of tourists pass under these bridges every day on board the Rabelo boats of Douro Acima, admiring, from a different and privileged perspective, the beautiful banks of the River Douro.
