Geocache Description:

This cache will be archived the first week of October.

A multi-cache hunt located in The Kettles Park adjacent to Fort Ebey State Park on Whidbey Island. The above coordinates are not for the cache! They serve only to locate the general area of the park; however, they are a Palindrome.

Washington State Parks now have a day use fee of $5 per vehicle. If you choose to access this area from Fort Ebey State Park be prepared to pay the iron ranger. However, we prefer to access the Kettles Park from SR20. There are three access points along the highway, which usually have ample parking.

The Hunt

This hunt requires the seeker to find four (almost) micro-caches. Each micro-cache contains a set of numbers needed to complete the coordinates for the main cache. The four micro-caches (in no particular order) are:

Yellow N 48º 13.354' W 122º 44.196'
Red N 48º 13.205' W 122º 44.614'
Blue N 48º 13.220' W 122º 44.229'
Green N 48º 13.109' W 122º 44.335'
sample card

(Click here to download these points for Easy GPS)

Inside each micro-cache you will find a card that lists a North and a West digit like the sample to the right. Plug the numbers you find into the appropriate spot in the following coordinate: (y = yellow, etc.)

N 48º 1y.rbg' W 122º 4r.bgy'

To experience this cache at its full difficulty rating take the above coordinates and go find the Cache. You will encounter the typical reception problems common to northwest forests. Don't fret too much. The micro's are all located within a step of the trail, and the final cache has decent reception and is visible to a geocachers eye from the tral. There is no need to attempt bush-wacking.

If you or your group would like to lower the difficulty rating by about one star, we have created a separate web page where you can get a trail map of the park, parking tips and more detailed encrypted hints to use as a last resort.

Whidbey Walk's Kettles Maze Multi-Cache

Kettles

???

A kettle is a depression in ground surface formed by the melting of a block of glacier ice buried by glacial drift.
Huh?
Glacial drift are deposits laid down directly by glaciers or laid down in lakes, ocean, or streams as a result of glacial activity.
Huh??
Crater like formations you will be hiking or riding into, around, over and through. I'll leave the professional geology to Bellinghamsters Geology Geocache Series.

Special thanks to EraSeeks A Cache of Palindromes for introducing us to this spot.

A Word About Moutain Bikes

This area is very popular with Moutain Bikers especially on a nice weekend. When hiking the trails in this area keep alert to potential bikers coming around blind corners and yield to the bikers when able.

Special Thanks

To the Whidbey Island Trails Council for maintaining this fine network of trails for all of us to use.
