You're looking at Middle Range Pond, one of a series of three attached ponds which have as a source the original Poland Spring. Behind you is Lower Range Pond, which has a state beach on its shores. If you visit the state beach, you'll observe along the shoreline the spring-fed nature of these ponds. In the winter Middle Range Pond is a big ice-fishing spot. Ever want to drive on a lake? Chances are, if you see ice shacks and people present on the lake, you just may dare to try driving on the lake. Beware - you're on your own, and most insurance companies look askance on an excuse of "Well, I THOUGHT the ice would be thick enough..."
Warning - Take heed of the numerous No Parking signs along both sides of the bridge and its approaches. There is a suitable parking area directly south of the bridge. Also, stay away from the spillway. The cache is a safe distance from it.
Concerning wheelchair accessibility: This should be available at all times, day and night. The parking area may not be plowed, so this may not be winter-friendly. The area is woodchips and pavement. If ever you have any accessibility difficulties, please let us know.
