Candlers Mountain just off a mountain bike trail with a 50 Cal Ammo
Can hidden well. Total elevation gain from the parking lot is just
over 300 feet "total", though it's lost and gained many times over
along the way.
Park at Wingate parking area at N37° 21.273' W079° 10.179'.
Access trailhead just across road from above parking lot at N37°
21.260' W079° 10.154'. Follow trail around the fenced area
surrounding the water tower, paying careful attention to how steep
and narrow the trail is. You will cross several ATV double track
trails that cut up/down the mountain. When the trail stops at a "T"
intersection, turn left and go up and down and up and down and
finally up up up for a while. When you get to the top, it's a very
short down to "5 corners". From there, follow your GPS readings and
discover the cache.
Keep in mind that this is a major intersection. Even with such a
low level of activity on this trail system, during the hiding of
the cache, we encountered 2 mountain bikers and a trail runner and
his dog.
I bring this up because it is important to understand that not
rehiding the cache at least as well as you find it, and keeping the
area looking rustic and untouched is crucial to the long term
survival of this cache.
BE CAREFUL AT CREEK CROSSINGS.
This waypointed trail is an intermediate skill level mountain bike
trail and if you ride it all, it's an expert skill level trail. You
can walk it all, and it becomes a hiker skill level.
Most of all, have fun, but if you've never been there and are
riding a bike, take someone with you. It might be days before
someone else is on the same trail you are on in case you wreck and
hurt yourself (which CAN happen). (Just call me "George" 'cause I
didn't watch out fo' dat treeeee!!!)
