Although this 3 mile loop has a few steep hills that could be a challenge to beginning hikers there will be no need to leave the trail until you get within 50' of the cache.
The Blue Oak trail can be reached from many areas of Briones Park but Reliez Valley Rd & Gloria Terr. is a great place to begin your hunt. The trail winds up into the Eastern hills of Briones Park and will give you a great view of Mt. Diablo, most of the central county area, as well as the many beautiful oak trees nearby. Remember to stop often to enjoy them.
During the rainy season this area gets pretty muddy and slippery and may not be good for hiking. Once it dries out, though, it is a great place to take a walk. You will often find cows roaming through the area (remember to close the gates) and it is not uncommon to spot coyotes skulking through the under brush.
There are, of course, a few steep hills to traverse during this hike with the most challenging one beginning at the wye in the trail as you drop down between the trees (the wye is about 3/4 of a mile in).If you go right you will get a shorter but steeper climb, if you go straight it will be longer but not quite as steep. We always go right because it is a better workout and we like the view.
The cache is a cammo'ed large plastic mayo jar. It should be easy to find so I won't give you much of a hint. It will become clear. There are many trees in the area but I believe they will not be a problem.
There is a variety of small items in the jar with Hammi the TB being the key figure. Take him out for a ride. Sign the log and enjoy the hike.
