Geocache Description:

IMPORTANT: Please take note of the police signs in the car park and ensure that valuables are not left in the car when you head off on your search.

This Multi-cache is located the site of Calleva, the remains of a Roman Town near Silchester near Reading. Park at this waypoint : N51 21.686 W001 05.279. You will walk about 3 miles.You will also need to be able to manually enter waypoints on your GPS.

The cache consists of a number of waypoints at which you will need to gather information to guide you to the next waypoint and also clues to get the final cache location after the 4th Waypoint.  The waypoints are placed so you will have a pleasant walk around the walls of Calleva before finding the cache.

Each waypoint will consist of number of questions and will have two elements. The first element will fill in the blanks to get to the next waypoint. The second element will provide correct numbers to complete the template for the final waypoint. DO NOT FORGET TO ANSWER THESE AS YOU GO!! Waypoint 4 will provide the final question, which will complete the Lat/Long for the cache location.

Waypoint I (N51 21.238 W1 05.019)

Clues for next waypoint: N51 21.XXX W1 04.7XX

Question 1: Around which date was this substantial item constructed? Add 48 to this date to get the missing latitude numbers for waypoint II.

Question 2: How many gates of the original 7 still remain? Add 10 to this figure to get the missing longitude numbers for waypoint II.

Clues for cache: Rounding down to the nearest metre, how high does the wall stand today ? Take this digit and place it in the 1st missing longitude digit (i.e. W1 04 XNN where you are filling in the X)

Waypoint II

Clues for next waypoint: N51 21.4XX W1 04.9XX

Question 1- Subtract 24 from the difference between the abandoned years. This will give you the missing numbers for the latitude to Waypoint III.

Question 2-The fabric of St Mary's church is largely from which century. Add 1 to this to give you the missing numbers to the longitude of Waypoint III.

Clues for cache: There are 3 words at the bottom right of the board by a red dot. Divide the total number of letters in these three words by 2 and place the single digit obtained in the first digit of the latitude (N51.21.XNN where you are filling X)


Waypoint III

Clues for next waypoint: N51 21.50X W1 04.5XX

Question 1- Multiply the century of the forum as it might have appeared shown in the picture by the century of when the forum basilica complex would have stood to your left to provide the missing digit of the latitude.

Question 2-How many letters in the city at the eastern end of the principal route for which the main east-west street formed part of ? This squared will provide the missing digits of the longitude.

Clues for cache: Number of letters in the God depicted by the head (=Y)

Number of paragraphs to the right hand side of the sign (=Z)

(N 51 NYZ where you are filling in the YZ)

Waypoint IV

Clues for cache: There is a date referring to King Stephen. Take the last two digits of this date (The decade digit and year digit) then subtract 1 from the number and this will give you the last two digits of the longitude (W1 04.NXX Where you are filling in the XX)


Due to new geocaching rules. the cache has had to be moved outside of the immediate area but not that far away....but please stop to take a look around the feature described in this last plaque.
