Golf Ball Graveyard Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

BCR: Went to this greenbelt for a stroll and to check on the cache. Second stage was missing. I took the other stages home. Cache lasted just over six months. It was fun while it lasted and I appreciate all the nice logs. Thanks.

Geocache Description:

Three stages in a small, public greenbelt. First stage is a 35mm canister hidden in a natural camouflage container laying on the ground. No need to cross the fence to get to the second stage, which stands out at about four feet off the ground. Final container is the size of a two-liter bottle. All easy finds with a total roundtrip of .2 miles. Should only take a total of about fifteen minutes. Kid, lunchtime, and night caching friendly. No poison ivy!

Here are the cache guidelines:

Trade a golf ball. Don't worry about downgrading the contents with regards to quality, most of these are junk. The ball you leave can be in any condition. You may decide to record the condition, color, logo (if any), and brand of ball you leave or take.

The rest is just commentary that you don't have to read.

While geocaching, I have found countless (ok, more than one hundred) used golf balls. I have decided to create a cache dedicated to the found golf ball.

Each time I find a golf ball, it feels like finding free money.

New golf balls retail for $1 to $5 per ball. Used balls are obviously less expensive, but still costly at the local golf pro shops. Play it Again Sports sells used golf balls for $.50 each. They will even pay you $0.20 each for used balls (depending on the condition).

There are basically four condition ratings: 1: New or like new - indistinguishable from new. Absolutely no cuts, scrapes, smudges, or scratches. 2: Good condition, but not new. May have players' marks or a slight blemish such as a light scuff. 3: More noticable imperfections, or range balls, striped balls, x-outs, and off brands. 4: Dirty, weathered, older style balls, cuts or major scuffs, discolored, shag balls or hitaways. Junk.

Range balls are specially marked balls used for practice at a driving range. The markings are typically either a painted red band around the ball or stripes. Golfers pay $4-$5 for a small basket or bucket of range balls that they are suppose to hit at the driving range. However, this is the golf ball most frequently found lost in the woods or in a field. Playing with a range ball on a golf course will get a player banned from the course.

Cut balls are excellent for art projects. Some people remove the covers and carve the large solid core.

I have used old golf balls to make pyramid puzzles for friends. For an example, see here and here.

I hope you enjoy this cache!

"Ode to the Golf Ball," by anonymous.

In my hand I hold a ball
White and dimpled, rather small
Oh, how bland it does appear,
This harmless looking little sphere.
By his size I could not guess
The awesome strength it does possess;
My life has not been quite the same
Since I chose to play this game.
It rules my mind for hours on end.
A fortune it has made me spend.

It has made me curse and cry
I hate myself and want to die
I am promised a thing called ‘par’
If I can hit it straight and far.
To master such a tiny ball
Should not be very hard at all.
But my desires the ball refuses
And does exactly as it chooses
It hooks and slices, dribbles, dies
and disappears before my eyes.
Often it will have a whim
To hit a tree or take a swim.
With miles of grass on which to land
It finds a tiny patch of sand.
Then has me offering up my soul
If it will just drop in the hole.
Its made me whimper like a pup,
and swear that I will give it up
And take to drink to ease my sorrow.
But “The Ball” knows...
I’ll be back...tomorrow.
