Geocache Description:

This is a pleasant 7-km round-trip hike through the woods, with a total elevation gain of roughly 200 meters.

20040901: Coordinates updated after cache maintenance by cymbc - both the original cache and the original neat stump it was hidden in had been trashed! Thanks for getting a new place for it, cymbc.

You can read about this hike in Gillean Daffern’s book of “Short Walks for Inquiring Minds” for “Canmore & Kananaskis Country”. She calls this a moderately strenuous loop.

Park at Allen Bill (formerly called Allen Bill Pond, until the floods of a couple years ago made it part of the Elbow), at N50°54.078' W114°41.213'. (Allen Bill was a former editor and outdoor columnist for the Calgary Herald.)

Follow the path along the Elbow River, going under Highway 66. Cross Ranger Creek soon after going under the highway, then through a meadow and across another small creek, turn left, pass through a gate in a drift fence. Follow the path.

At N50°54.606' W114°40.864' is a junction. You have the choice of going left and doing the loop in a clockwise direction, or going straight across the bridge and doing the loop in a counter-clockwise direction. I recommend going straight – the view on the way back will be a reward for a job well done!

The cache is planted near the furthest point of the loop, so you might as well do the whole round trip.

After you have found the cache, I recommend that you head further up hill a couple hundred meters to N50°55.036' W114°42.213' – you will be in a wonderful alpine meadow. And you will have a great view of Prairie Mountain (GCGM5W – We Put the ACHE in GEOCACHE) and Moose Mountain.

The cache is a peanut-butter type of container, with the usual assortment of geostuff.
