EarthCaching 101
Did you ever wonder what the deal is with EarthCaches?
What are they? What is involved with finding and logging them?
How do I create one?
Join us Sunday, October 12, 2008 from 2-4 p.m., for a short
primer - EarthCaching 101. This event is held in celebration of
International EarthCache Day, which by some strange coincidence is
also October 12th this year. ;)
What's Going On?
We will be giving an educational talk with plenty of
opportunities for questions (and answers) about:
- What are EarthCaches?
- The history of EarthCaches.
- Who regulates EarthCaches?
- Finding & logging EarthCaches.
- EarthCaching Kits (what they might contain).
- Creating an EarthCache.
- Ideas for potential EarthCaches.
- How to research a potential EarthCache.
- How to obtain permission for an EarthCache.
- How to submit an EarthCache through the GSA website.
- The EarthCache Masters program.
We expect the 101 talk to last about an hour. The second hour
will be for extended questions, discussions about local features
that might be suitable for EarthCaches, and sharing information
about local area EarthCaches.
After the event we will lead a caravan of interested cachers on
a hunt for a few of the nearby EarthCaches. Get a hands-on
opportunity to see what is involved in finding an EarthCache and
meeting the logging requirements. And get a few EarthCache smileys
in the process! For your convenience there will be hand-outs with
the pertinent information for 3-4 nearby EarthCaches.
The posted coordinates are to a parking area by a covered
pavilion in Riverside Park. We haven’t made any official
reservations, so it's possible (but not likely) that it will be
rented out that afternoon. In the event that the pavilion is rented
out we will try meeting at an alternative area in the same park and
will post the new coordinates on this cache page.
Geoaware (the EarthCache reviewer) has made available to us a
limited number of white EarthCache pins. We will be handing out one
pin per caching team at the conclusion of the event. In the event
more teams attend than we have pins for we will hand them out in
the order you posted your will attend. Thank you Geoaware for your
generosity.
