Gold rush fever was at high pitch in the Wichita Mountains at the turn of the century. Mount Lincoln was host to the last smelter built in the area around 1906. What might be more interesting though is how this mountain got its name.
This mountain makes up the head portion of a horizontal profile of Abe Lincoln. Looking west from the entrance to Fawn Creek Campground, his head is pointing south with his hands folded across his middle to the north, Elk Mountain. Over the past 100 years some of his face has eroded away. The cache is located on his forehead.
This is a strenuous hike and you should be comfortable with exposure. It can be climbed without the use of climbing gear if you are careful to choose your approach. You may also have to climb a tree near the end of the hunt.
