When construction began in 1795, Poplar Hill Mansion was to be the manor house for a 357 acre farm. Unable to finish it's construction due to finances, the house was put up for sale in 1803. The construction was completed in 1805, and the farm thrived, before eventually being subdivided into the suberb called "Newtown". At 4.5 stories, the federal style home is perfectly symmetrical on the outside and nearly symmetrical on it's first three stories. It is listed as the oldest home in Salisbury and was bought by the city of Salisbury in 1974 and placed in a public trust.
According to legend, a 19 year old slave girl named Sara lost her life when her dress caught fire in the second floor rear bedroom, where scorch marks can still be seen on the wood floor. Considered a consoling spirit, tales of her sightings have enthralled visitors throughout the years.
