Geocache Description:

One of Maine's famous scenic spots!

UPDATE, OCTOBER 2023: I’m very excited and honored to be able to adopt this “legacy” cache in its 20th year!

Many thanks to “Dream_Catcher” for creating it and keeping it active all these years!

Not to take anything away from the spirit of the original cache, but as I’ve observed this one over the past few years I’ve always felt there was a bit of a missed opportunity in having excluded finders from posting any photos. This is such a unique and special piece of Maine history that I feel allowing photos would help celebrate it! Of course, this meant the “proof of visit” questions had to be changed since any photos would have spoiled the original questions. (Although I'd noticed there'd been a few spoiler photos that had snuck through in the logs over the past few years).

Therefore, I’m adding a new question as “proof of visit”: As you face the sign, on the right-hand side of the wooden portion of the post, about two feet above the ground, there is a “date nail” hammered into the wood. (For those who don’t know what a “date nail” is, it’s just a large nail that has a two-digit number on the head of the nail. They were once used on railroad ties to indicate what year the railroad tie was installed). Here’s an example:

To log this cache as a find, observe the nail that’s hammered into the side of the sign post, send me a message and TELL ME WHAT TWO-DIGIT NUMBER IS ON THE HEAD OF THIS NAIL.

(If there is snow more than two feet deep, you might have to brush away the snow on the right-hand side of the post).

In loyalty to this cache’s legacy I’m leaving the original text below, but it’s NO LONGER NECESSARY to answer those original questions. (There was sometimes confusion about how many countries should be counted since two of the names on the sign are cities [Paris and Naples], not countries, and thus people wouldn’t know whether to include the countries those cities represent or not. Some people also misunderstood adding the total sum of numbers).

Anyway, all that’s necessary now is to TELL ME WHAT TWO-DIGIT NUMBER IS ON THE HEAD OF THE DATE NAIL which is hammered into the wooden portion of the sign post, about two feet from the ground, on the right-hand side of the post.

FEEL FREE TO POST PHOTOS OF THE SIGN (but please don’t post any photos of the date nail, or they will be deleted). THANKS!
