Geocache Description:

Old Antarctic Explorer Cache. The Cache is not at the coordinates above. The coordinates are the first of five stages. The cache is a small container at the fifth stage.

An Old Antarctic Explorer found a treasure but he didn’t have enough time to extract it because of an upcoming whiteout. When you know how soon the weather can go bad you can understand that he hastily wrote the coordinates in his “Rainbow” notebook. The OAE was a clever man. He had a notebook with colored sections arranged according the rainbow colors found in Newton’s sevenfold list. He also wanted to keep his secret so he split up the data over the different sections of the colored notebook.

Unfortunately, he died on his way back from The Ice and his notebook was divided among seven heirs, each receiving one colored section. None of the heirs knew what to do with their section, so they posted them on eBay and I purchased all the sections. After considerable research and brain work, I finally cracked the code and discovered how he codified the coordinates of the treasure. And now at long last I share the fruits of my labors so that you can go and find the treasure too!

At each stage you will find piece elements and jumbled coordinates that will eventually lead you to the fifth stage where the cache is located. You will also find one figure required for the next stage’s coordinates in your search.

The OAE used matrixes as follows—you must preserve this format for your calculations:

Once you complete your calculation, you will find a numeral for the next stage.

Go to the above coordinates for Stage 1. You will find the monument of Admiral Byrd. Hopefully you haven’t forgotten your metric tape measure. Remember, the OAE was a scientist. All measures are in centimeters and round figures (no decimals) unless mentioned differently.

This is the Green Matrix and the values are:
nn = the length of one side of the bust base which rests on the marble pedestal.
mm = diameter of the circle etched on the right side of the pedestal as you face the bust + number of days in a week.
A = height + width of thicker part of the pedestal + the 6th Prime number
Don’t forget to measure the diagonal of that thicker piece of the pedestal at the back of the monument where there are no broken corners. It will come in handy at a later stage.

Now go to Stage 2 located at:
S 77° 51.A’
E 166° 41.660’

The values of the Yellow Matrix are:
nn = length of left arm as you face the writings.
mm = [total signs of the English text (including digits and punctuation)] + [total of digits ? sum of year] – (length of the measured arm)
B = (Total number of words and figures of the English text) – (number of the commandments received by Moses)

Stage 3 is located at:
S 77° 50.762’
E 166° B.297’

This is the Violet Matrix:
nn = (length of the diagonal of the back of the monument at the green matrix) + (sum of the first six digits of Pi).
For this mm value, we are looking for a three digit number. Please look at the French text section on the plaque.
mm = First digit: number of letters of the word located 5th line and 7th position.
Second digit: number of letters of the word located 5th line and 5th position.
Third digit: number of letters of the word located 3rd line and 4th word.

C = find the frequency of the tone B of 4th octave and calculate the wave length of it using a sound speed of 345.4 m/s (in air at 23.5 C) and multiply the value by 1000 and drop the decimal position.

Now you are ready to follow the OAE to the fourth location with the Red Matrix located at:
S 77° 50.843
E 166° 39.C

nn = first reference in the little box.
mm = second reference in the little box.

Compute your matrixes and you will soon find the treasure.

Cache content at start: logbook, pencil, fridge magnet, Geocache explanations, U.S. Quarter, Antarctic OAE pin, FTF IPY medal
