Karl Manne Georg Siegbahn, född 3 december 1886 i Örebro, död 26
september 1978 i Stockholm, var en svensk fysiker, professor i
experimentell fysik vid Lunds universitet 1919 och professor vid
Uppsala universitet 1922. Han mottog 1924 års nobelpris i fysik för
sina "röntgenspektroskopiska upptäckter och forskningar".
1936 tilldelades Manne Siegbahn en professur i experimentell
fysik, och Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien beslutade att grunda ett
institut med honom som föreståndare. Delar av detta institut utgör
idag Manne Siegbahnlaboratoriet vid Stockholms Universitet.

I dag finns MSL finns i Manne Siegbahnhusen alldeles norr om
tunnelbanestationen Universitetet. Laboratoriet bedriver forskning
och utveckling inom acceleratorfysik och drev CRYRING-anläggningen
fram till 2010 för experiment inom atom- och molekylfysik.
Aktiviteterna vid laboratoriet innefattar också konstruktion och
uppbyggnad av den dubbla elektrostatiska lagringsringen DESIREE som
kommer vara klar 2010

Acceleratorn finns nedsprängd i berggrunden under huset med
betongväggen. När ni tog er till cachen gick ni under traversen som
används för att lyfta utrustning ner till anläggningen. Vattnet i
den stora dammen används för att kyla utrustningen när man kör
experiment.

Från cachens placering syns några av universitetets byggnader. I
byggnaden längst västerut finns universitetets fakultetsklubb, som
har fått namn efter Manne Siegbahn. I Öster ligger Geohusen, som
hör till de nyaste husen. Man kan också se Frescatihallen.

Karl Manne Georg Siegbahn (3 December 1886 - 26 September 1978)
was a Swedish physicist, and Nobel laureate in physics for his
discoveries and research in the field of X-ray spectroscopy. He was
born in Örebro, Sweden.
In 1936 Manne Siegbahn was awarded a professorship in
experimental physics, and the Royal Academy of Sciences decided to
establish an institute with him as manager. Parts of this institute
is currently Manne Siegbahn Laboratory at Stockholm University.
Today is MSL situated in the Manne Siegbahn Building, which is
located just north of the underground station "Universitetet". The
laboratory has performed research and development in accelerator
physics and was running the CRYRING facility for experiments in
atomic and molecular physics until 2010. The activities at the
laboratory also include the design and construction of the double
electrostatic storage ring DESIREE wich will be completed 2010.
The facilities is in the ground below the house with the
concrete wall. When you walked to the cache, you went under a crane
used to lift equipment into the facility. The water in the pond is
used to cool the equipment when experiments are performed.
From the cache location some of the university buildings can be
seen. The building at the far west houses the university's faculty
club, which is named after Manne Siegbahn. In the East is Geohusen,
which are among the newest buildings. You can also see
Frescatihallen.
