Geocache Description:

The first in a series of four Along the Milky Way. Orion the Hunter, a winter constellation, is a treasure, with Rigel, Betelgeuse and its three belt stars in a row lighting up the night sky from December to April. The stars are arranged so that it is easy to see the figure of a hunter, complete with a lion’s skin in one hand and a raised club in the other.

Betelgeuse is fabulous! Its name comes from the Arabic word for “house of the twins” apparently because the adjacent constellation of Gemini with contains twin stars – Pollux and Castor. A variable star, it varies in brightness every seven years.

Located south of the three belt stars is a fuzzy smudge of brightness known as the Orion Nebula or M42. This cloud of gas and dust is 1500 light years away which means that the light you see now left the nebula around the year 500. This nebula is the birthplace of new stars. With a small telescope or binoculars, young stars only a few thousand years old can be seen. These young stars are the hottest and brightest giving the nebula it’s glow.

This cache is a small camo tape wrapped screw lid plastic container. Some bush whacking is needed and your feet may get wet during rainy periods
