Geocache Description:

Come join the CCGC and GBA for an Earthcache Event involving a private 1-2 hour interpretive talk with Yosemite National Park's Geologist Ranger, Dr. Greg Stock.  The coordinates at the top of the Listing page are where we will be meeting with Mr. Stock in El Cap Meadow at 10 a.m.  As part of the pre-Event of this day, we will also be having a potluck Pancake Breakfast at the nearby Yellowpine Campground beginning around 7 a.m. (please see Additional Waypoint below for campground location).

Mr. Greg Stock was born and raised in the Sierra Nevada just North of Yosemite.  His interest in the local geology led him to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Geology at Humboldt State University and a PhD in Earth Science at the University of California at Santa Cruz. where he studied uplift and erosion of the Sierra Nevada.  Greg is Yosemite National Park's first-ever Park Geologist.

- Geology Underfoot in Yosemite National Park

Mr. Stock, along with his colleagues, were featured in the History Channel's, "How the Earth was Made" series, during the Yosemite segment.  Mr. Stock is also co-author of the recently published "Geology Underfoot in Yosemite National Park".

Along with, what is probably a standard of interpretive talks in The Valley, formation and basic Geology of The Valley, Mr. Stock will also talk about his recent research into rock falls, both past, relatively present, and possible techniques the Park is employing to predict future rock fall risks in The Valley.

A potluck Pancake Breakfast will commence at around 7 a.m.  at the Yellowpine Campground where the VIP/CITO participants from the day before activity are gathered.  Please feel free to drop in and have breakfast, share your favorite breakfast item, or just grab a cup of steaming hot coffee.  We will begin warming up the skillet for some hotcakes around 7 a.m., and breaking camp around 9-9:30 a.m. before heading over to El Cap Meadow to join Mr. Stock.

Meeting Place:

The meeting place will be on the East side of El Cap Meadow near the bridge.  Parking is relatively plentiful, but is parallel parking only.  Please park completely off the road on the wide shoulder, on the South side of the road (that will be on your left as you drive down the one way North Side Drive).

Please Note that getting to North Side Drive and El Cap Meadow requires driving in to The Valley quite some distance (nearly to the Store/Visitors Center area).  You will need to drive in on South Side Drive, take Sentinel Bridge across the Merced River, to be able to take North Side Drive back to El Cap Meadow.  Please allow 15-20 minutes driving time if you're planning on attending the pre-Event Potluck Pancake Breakfast.
