Loose Triangulation Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

MidMoDave: Stopped by and retrieved the micros at #1 (bottom of the tree) and #2 (in the rock wall) --both in fine shape. The final cache was obviously gone and point #3 had already been removed. I'm going to archive this cache and submit it's replacement, which is at the other end of the Loose Park. It's a much better location and less busy area, anyway. I think it will be a lot of fun.

Geocache Description:

A fun little multi in Loose Park, loosely based on the same principle which allows your GPSr to tell you where you are: triangulation.

This cache is a similar to the cache 'Triangulation Sensation' by Ooga Booga. It was in Columbia, MO and has since been archived. But I liked it because it was a unique multi-cache. So, I asked Ooga Booga if I could steal his idea for a cache at Loose Park and I borrowed a little bit from his old cache page.

Were you one of those people that slept through geometry class in high school? Too bad, because you might need to call on those forgotten lessons to help find this cache. Or you can do like I did with Ooga Booga's cache and simply walk it out the 'no math' way.

Here's the deal: Hidden in the park are three different waypoints. Each waypoint contains information telling you the distance from that waypoint to the final cache. The waypoint is either a mini m&m's tube, or stuck directly to a surface...you'll have to determine which is which. Please do not take the card inside the tubes. Simply record the number and re-hide the tubes better than you found them!

Using each of these distances, you'll be able to triangulate the information to discover the location of the final cache. The 'scientific' method is to plot the points on a sheet of paper and draw distance circles from each. The cache will be wherever the three circles intersect. For instance, if the three waypoints were 55, 70, and 85 feet away from the cache, your drawing might look something like this:

For mathematicians, a piece of graph paper and a compass (mechanical, not magnetic) might come in handy for this one. For a rather advanced method to solve this problem, click here.

For the rest of us 'brute strenght and ignorance' folks, simply use the 'Go To' feature on your gps and try to figure out where you should be walking the distance from each point.

The final cache is a small sandwich size tupperware container - if you're going to trade, bring something similarly tiny. It is well hidden. Please rehide it well, so that it won't be taken.

The three waypoints are located at:

  • 1. N 39° 02.011 W 94° 35.572
  • 2. N 39° 02.089 W 94° 35.530
  • 3. N 39° 02.040 W 94° 35.600

This is a high traffic area!! Part of the difficulty of the cache is because you have to be discreet!! If it's too busy, please come back another time. Or you might try finding 'Cache on the Loose' (just over 1/10th mile away) and come back to this one. (although it's in a high traffic area also)
