Geocache Description:

Cache 5: Serengeti in my Africa Loop series, located in Harriman State Park. Six caches in the series: Nile, Sahara, Congo, Zulu, Serengeti and Timbuktu. Hit all 6 as a loop and spend a nice morning or afternoon of hiking through a variety of terrains and stunning vistas. Please remember to way point your car. Cache is a cigarette pack size decon box, with room for small items. DO NOT bushwhack from Zulu, use the trails (You will regret it! A river and a cliff will impede your progress!)

Parking: N41 13.824 W074 08.405

Recommended route. The hike should take a 2-3 hours with both varied terrain and elevations.
Park in the roadside parking lot on Route 106.

Trailhead: Across the road you will Red blazes for the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail heading up Tom Jones Mtn. Starting at the trail head, hike up to Cache 1: The Nile, (Shelters of Harriman: Tom Jones is a detour to your left), continue back down the mountain to Cache 2: Sahara. After finding Sahara, cross over the Blue Victory trail (blazes are white with a blue V) and continue on the Red Blazes up onto a ridge line until you merge into the Triangle Trail (Yellow Triangle Blazes) at Parker Cabin Mtn. Double back along the Triangle trail which goes immediately down the mountain . Cache 3: Congo is located there. Be careful following the yellow trail the blazes are quite frequent but the trail forks in places. Follow the Triangle trail along to some power lines and Cache 4: Zulu. DO NOT bushwhack to cache 5, there is a marsh and stream in between. Please stay on the trail. Continue along the trail to an intersection with Victory (white blazes with blue V’s), make a sharp left. Follow the Victory trail, a wide service road along the shore of Lake Skenonto to Cache 5: Serengeti. Then continue following the Victory trail to a paved Ranger road, which runs along the side of a marsh. At the fork continue on the left trail (the trail blazers seem to stop along this stretch). Near cache 6 you will come to a T-junction turn left and take the smaller trail to Cache 6: Timbuktu. Continue along the unmarked trail past the ranger work area until you meet up at a T-junction with the Victory trail (blazes mark the trail). Turn left and follow the Victory Trail back to the Dunderberg (red blazes) and hump back over Tom Jones Mtn. There are two less vertical, but further, alternate routes from here: 1. Turn left on the Victory trail and take it all the way to Rte 106 and return on the road (this involves no climbing) 2. Turn right on the Victory trail and follow it to a service road. Turn left and follow the road through the Masonic cabins to Rte 106. (FYI: This option is a very long detour). All three routes should take you back to your car.
