Geocache Description:

A tale involving hydrogen.

The cache is NOT found at the co-ordinates above - these co-ordinates are close but actually have nothing to do with the cache itself.

Vincenzo Lunardi was a famous Italian aeronaut who frequently took to the skies in the late 18th century, travelling by balloon. By all accounts he was a charismatic, popular and eccentric character - sometimes taking his pets with him on his journeys and being the inspiration for ladies fashion items of the time - such as bonnets, skirts and garters. Although he began his ballooning exploits in England, where he worked for the Neapolitan Embassy, he later travelled to Scotland and made successful ascents in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Kelso.

On the 5th of October 1785, he left Heriots Hospital in Edinburgh in a hydrogen balloon, and ended his journey by landing safely, 46 miles way, in a field in Fife - thus becoming the first known airman to arrive in the Kingdom. Apparently he did not intend to travel this far, however he drifted north and had no other option but to fly over the Firth of Forth.

The cache is hidden at the memorial to mark this event, which can be found here:

Cache is a 35mm film tub and contains log and small pencil only.
