Prior to the time of the Inca Empire, the Xauxa culture thrived in this region. The people built towns of stone on the hilltops and farmed the valleys below. Tunan Marca was one of the major towns at this time (the 10th through 14th centuries). The Tunan Marca archeological site is one of the largest and best preserved sites of the period.
To get here, first head to the modern town of Tunan Marca, also called Concho, at S 11 43.788 W 075 34.219. You can hike to the cache from Concho, or go by bike or car. Ask the best route to the ruins. This is a good idea because the roads are currently being dug up to install sewer lines, so the passable roads through the village are changing from week to week. Your best bet for help is the museum, which is usually open Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. But anyone in the plaza can give their opinion. Once you get on the road out of town, you should be fine. There is only one fork in the road, which clearly indicates the way to the ruins (bear right). Park at the end of the road at S 11 42.903 W 075 35.695.
Walk up the paved path to its top. Then continue up the hill, past the first ancient wall, to the second wall around the site at S11 43.157 W 075 35.851. You will be entering what some people here consider a sacred space. If you feel inclined, you can leave a small offering to the Pachamama (Earth Mother). There is a pile of rocks on your right (going uphill) that looks like a geocache might be hidden there. But this is a place to tuck your offering under the stones. Something biodegradable (like a flower) is appropriate. On your way out of the site, it is customary to add a stone to one of the cairns. In both cases, the idea is do these things in a spirit of gratitude.
Continue up hill. I suggest you head for S 11 43.219 W 075 35.907, as you will have a fairly easy route this way and will end in an interesting area. This was a family compound with a central plaza where an extended family shared daily life.
The cache is nearby. Search for a small Tupperware box.
