Geocache Description:

The island is to be reached only by boat. As an anchorage the north part of the island is recommended.

The island Saint Andrea is a lagoon-island in the North Adriatic. With her neighbour island Porto Buso it forms one, in all weather conditions, safe entrance in the lagoon and further to the river Corno up to San Gorgio used by big freighters from all over the world. Or the idyllic river Aussa navigable, for smaller boats, up to Cervignano.

This Aussa once was the border river between Austria and Italy. On the island Porto Buso the Austrians had a duty station, on Saint Andrea the Italians. There is a story; we only can hope this story is not true:
The occupying crews of both islands were not really minded hostilely, over a long time they nightly visited the other ones, drinking and playing cards together. One day, some important “gentlemen” meant, it is necessary, once again, to proclaim the war between the two countries. Two Austrians rowed in the evening of the 23rd May  1915 once again for a card game to Saint Andrea, they knew nothing about the
outbreak of the war. On the other side there waited not the well known Financieri, there were soldiers waiting. And these both Austrians became the first dead people in this new south front.

Every time, if we went between the islands we memory this story… …

During later years a monastery was established on Saint Andrea, on Porto Buso a pub. The pub is even there today, the monastery now is in private property. It is permitted
to enter the beach . The inside of the island (it is marked) is private property and a protected area, this should be absolutely respected!!!
